port forwarding simply will not work

Rate this question

I have transmission, sickrage and couchpotato daemons running on a raspberry pi along with a ddns updater.

I have an asus rt-ac3200 router running merlin firmware that is setup to run an openvpn client (torguard).

all traffic on the pi is routed through the vpn. I have setup the routing tables just for couch potato as a test.

I have requested the port 5050 be forwarded through my services.

However, any attempt to access the couch potato server running on port 5050 are either refused or simply timeout when trying to access from outside the network. (internalip):5050 works fine on the network. If i turn off the vpn in the router I can also access it by using my ddns domain name:5050.

The entire purpose of wanting a VPN is for torrenting. If i can not open ports for incomming connections then it is pretty worthless. I tried this once before and support was less than helpfull before I canceled. I'm going to try again.

Any suggestions on what I should try?
