New Setup - Nighthawk R7000 with VPN

Rate this question

I now have an Anonymous VPN and Proxy plan. Right now I'm using the Anonymous Proxy. I have a new Nighthawk R7000 router on its way to utilize the Anonymous VPN service and i would like to get something documented on this setup right out of the box.

For me I'm a Windows user with very limited time on UNIX. Probably Windows 95% and UNIX 5% usage over time.

First thing
I need to find out exactly what version of WW-DRT I'm to install on the R7000?

I'm told the Knog version is the one I should be looking at to install?

I went to: http://myopenrouter.com/download/list

DD-WRT Kong Mod (10-26-15) for NETGEAR R7000

Second thing

To flash the new DD-WRT firmware I'm guessing I use one of these two methods?

How to setup OpenVPN on DD-WRT Manually (Newer DD-WRT Builds)

How to setup OpenVPN on DD-WRT using TorGuard Startup Scripts

Which of the above two is better (I have no problem following directions to run scripting)?

Third Thing

I have some internal services that I think might need to, or must bypass the VPN, like Ooma (VIOP), TiVo, and Roku. Is this correct?

I have three computer that are on the internal network that belong to me, and one company computer that at times connect to the wireless, and sometimes wired in.

Should I be looking at allowing specific IP's through the VPN, or should I be looking at making the services bypass the VPN?

Note: I'm all new to this so I may not be on the right track here, or doing things in the correct order :)

1) Yes i use this build myself and it works perfectly fine, no issues so i would suggest you use this build.

2) No these guides are to setup the vpn after you have flashed the router, see below link to flash:

3) in DD-WRT you have policy based routing where you can direct certain devices/pc's in your network through vpn and leave the rest outside the vpn.

That’s explained in this guide that you will need after flashing >> https://torguard.net...yarticle&id=192
