Speed seems too slow

Rate this question

Question

eric
I‘m in China, using 8Mbps ADSL, when not connected to VPN, speed test normal

3964018437.png

After connecting the VPN, the speed is very slow, not even see the 480P youtube video smoothly. This is the fastest I've tested of all the servers

JP server:

3964013969.png

Also, after my Android phone on the L2TP VPN connection still no way to watch youtube video, showing open the page quickly, but it is difficult to load the video. google play can open but no way to download APP. after use torguard APP, it can be connected only UDP mode, but it is easy to break. TCP mode can not connect, always shows "Reconnecting"

Conclusion is: torguard no resistance against Chinese firewall

Hi Eric, your not using China optimised servers (stealth) so yes you can be sure the China firewall will mess with your connections stability and speed - you are on ADSL and on a very small connection so the odds are really stacked against you anyway.

Closest China optimised servers are LA PPTP and L2TP, normally L2TP is the better choice, but you can also try OpenVPN Stealth in LA through our TG Lite client, try always use UDP when connecting through OpenVPN (TG Lite).

I'm in China.

Can't use the Windows Torguard software because it keeps disconnecting me.

But I can connect using manual L2TP configuration.

Can't connect to fr.torguardvpnaccess.com. [edit: today I can]

But I can connect to JP and LA.

I do not think it's China firewall mess my speed, because GFW will block your connection, but not reduce your speed. According to your suggestion, I did some speed test again.

LA server are so many,no way to test it all, so I just randomly pick some of it.

Normal:

You see, 173.254. *. * is much faster than other IP, why?I can even watch 720P video on youtube smoothly, of course, is through the IP 173.254.208.194

Yes, I always could. It was a temporary issue with authentication, because today it works.

By the way, how can I get the list of IP for la.west.usa.* like eric did? I want to find the fastest connection for myself as well.

Just got back from China (Xiamen). I was only successfully able to connect to any VPN servers about 1 out of 15 tries! Anyone else having these issues?

I focused on Stealth servers because that's what one of the forum posts by Support had mentioned still works. Obviously it was very hit or miss. I believe the only one that worked was LA Stealth.

It would often get stuck when at the "Public IP" gathering stage. Without the Public IP, the internet is unusable.

I understand the GFW crackdown, but Support team members also shouldn't be promoting the service as fully working. 1 out of 15 tries is not workable as it would take me 30+ minutes just to check my gmail. I can take slow (as it also was when connected), but not multiple non-successful connections.

I was using the TG Lite Mac app and tried various Stealth and non-Stealth UDP connections. I tried TCP too since I couldn't connect for a long time, but that was even worse as it wouldn't get past the first stage of connection, so went back to UDP.

Hey there - overall feedback is good, i really depends on your ISP over there, some tend to mess with your connections more than others.

We are working on some things that will help with stability when under the GFW, we wont be long in implementing it and along with some good great changes to TG Lite.

I too have difficulty getting all the Stealth servers to cooperate and nothing seems to work consistently for me (my ISP is Sichuan Cable Network). The US and HK SSTP addresses are a decent backup when I can't get any of the Stealth servers to work. I have the most success going to Singapore, but I often have to switch from UDP to TCP or back to UDP to get it to work. The Netherlands (non-256 bit encryption) is my second best choice and it helps that it's torrent optimized. I find that usually in the evenings (China time) is when the VPN is most unusable.

I've also been playing with the proxy servers and I can't seem to get these guys to work at any consistency either. They'll say I'm connected, but then I'll not get any connections or they'll work for a few minutes and then drop off. I think this due to the GFW as well, since the proxy seems to work OK once I'm on the VPN. Not quite sure what to do about that.

I'm with the same problem with this Chinese GCF, very difficult to get a stable connection. I don't care with fast speed, all I want is my gmail back LOL.

Is there anyway we can try SSH Tunnel over TCP 443?

I've tried SSH tunnel with my home server and SSHTunnel app in android, it connects but will drop off after a minute or so. actually it won't drop the connection, it just drop the packages while the connection still up.

I don't have many options to try as I can't download apps from google from here in China.

Our latest version of our Android app now supports stealth, you can use the LA stealth, Japan Stealth etc

How are you trying to connect to SSTP ?

You can use the Asian optimize server,it just recently on line.I have been test, speed seems very good.Only supports L2TP VPN and stealth. Here is the server address:
66.212.31.250
66.212.31.42
96.44.140.250
96.44.140.194
96.44.140.50
96.44.140.26
66.212.31.234
66.212.31.170
66.212.31.138
66.212.31.130

@Support

I think the Asian-optimized servers do well, if you can add a few more, such as Hong Kong or Japan's server, it will be very competitive in China. Also, USA SSH server has been blocked for a long time, it is possible to solve this problem?

TorGuard USA SSH still working well in my area (Shannxi). In daily time, speed up to 25Mb then drop to around 1~2Mb in peak time. (China Telecom 50M fiber)

http://prntscr.com/6dmrhg

You can try "FoxyProxy" or "AutoProxy" add-ons in Firefox (only test in Bitvise client) and enabled for Subscription Group: gfwList (P.R.China)

Only international or blocked site's traffic in gfwList via SSH, others website still by local traffic.

https://addons.mozilla.org/zh-tw/firefox/addon/foxyproxy-standard

http://xthunder.googlecode.com/files/autoproxy20131215.xpi

ã€Tips】

Type about:config in Firefox browser's address and then set as follows to get better performance

media.peerconnection.enabled → false

browser.chrome.toolbar_tips → false
network.proxy.socks_remote_dns → true
network.http.max-connections →  50
network.http.max-connections-per-server →  25
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy →  100
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server →  25

Also, Privacy Badger, Ghostery, Adblocks Plus and Disconnect are must have add-ons

@support

Cisco any connect and Shadowsocks protocol will be added soon?

:D

latest Bitvise version is 6.24
http://www.bitvise.com/ssh-client-download

try to set listen port to 443 (same setting with Knowledge Base of TorGuard)
http://prntscr.com/6hdv17
http://prntscr.com/6hdytx

I use another proxy extensions in Chrome as follows (this add-ons is from another vpn service, they can support gfwList rule and absolutely free  :P )
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/vpns-http-proxy/deoodoglhbmpafkajmlggnjnngdclnie

setup SSH with AutoProxy & gfwList in Firefox for your reference
http://is.gd/ZPCnRy

ps: I do only use SSH to browse website, not for stream online movie. Sometimes, I use 4 different tools and open 4 browsers to bypass GFW at the same time (vpn only for Chrome, SSH in Firefox, TOR with meek-azure, Microsoft remote for IE)  :D

The Asia Optimized server works really well for me as well, both on Windows and Android devices (using their respective apps).

My problem spot now lies with my Chromebook. It was given to me to by my work to test and review while in China and if the VPN is working it is great--you can't beat that boot time! Anyway, it's rare that I can get an L2TP connection to work on it these days, though I have yet to try @Eric's list of IPs above.

Anybody figure out how to set up Stealth OpenVPN connections on ChromeOS?
