ISP sent email about possible malware

Yesterday I was on a torrent web site and my VPN was on.  This morning I get an email from my ISP, Cox, stating that I may have downloaded a virus.  Sure enough.  I had downloaded a trojan which Microsoft Security Essentials caught  after a deep scan.  I do not have any security software installed other than Microsoft Security Essentials.  I am using latest version of Firefox on Win 7 sp1. How could Cox tell that I downloaded a trojan.  The Cox tech either doesn't know, or  is withholding the answer but he seems to think that my browser sent something to Cox.
