VPN/Proxy for qbittorrent

What's the difference between Proxy and VPN if I have the VPN and want to mask my ip for torrents? I'm using the client but have no idea how to check if its masking my IP. Should I add the VPN Hostname for the server I want to my qbit and add auth with my UN/PW or do I do a socks5 like the guide?
